What is EN ISO 12217-2:2012?

EN ISO 12217-2:2012 is an international standard that provides guidelines and requirements for the design and construction of small craft, specifically sailboats and motorboats up to 24 m in length. It covers various aspects such as hulls, stability, freeboard and sheer lines, corridors, and cockpit drainage. This standard aims to ensure the safety and seaworthiness of small craft by setting minimum requirements for their design and construction.

Hulls and Stability

One of the key areas covered by EN ISO 12217-2:2012 is the hull design and stability of small craft. The standard specifies the minimum requirements for the structural strength and watertightness of the hull, including factors like impact resistance, buoyancy, and stability. It sets guidelines for the calculation and assessment of stability characteristics, taking into account various parameters such as displacement, center of gravity, and transverse metacentric height.

Freeboard and Sheer Lines

Freeboard refers to the distance between the waterline and the upper deck level of a boat. Sheer lines, on the other hand, are the curvature lines of a boat's deck from bow to stern. EN ISO 12217-2:2012 provides specific requirements for both freeboard and sheer lines, ensuring that they are designed in a way that promotes safety and proper functioning of the boat. These requirements take into consideration factors such as wave height, wind forces, and load distribution on the deck.

Corridors and Cockpit Drainage

In order to enhance comfort and safety on board, EN ISO 12217-2:2012 also includes guidelines for the design of corridors and cockpit drainage systems. Corridors refer to the passages and walkways within a boat, and the standard specifies minimum width requirements to allow for easy movement of passengers and crew. The standard also provides recommendations for cockpit drainage, ensuring that water accumulation is effectively managed to prevent any hazards or damage.

Overall, EN ISO 12217-2:2012 plays a crucial role in setting the standards and requirements for the design and construction of small craft. By adhering to these guidelines, boat manufacturers can ensure the safety, stability, and seaworthiness of their products. It provides a valuable resource for designers, engineers, and boat owners alike, promoting the development of high-quality and reliable small craft.
