What is BS EN ISO 8528-1:2019?

BS EN ISO 8528-1:2019 is an international standard that sets guidelines for the technical requirements of reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine driven generating sets. These generating sets, commonly referred to as gensets, are responsible for supplying electrical power in various applications such as emergency backup power and prime power for remote locations.

Technical Requirements

The standard defines the technical requirements for four main components of a genset - the prime mover (engine), the generator, the control system, and the associated electrical equipment. It provides specifications related to rating, performance, fuel consumption, and emissions. The aim is to ensure that these gensets operate reliably under different load conditions and in various environmental conditions.

Rating Definitions

BS EN ISO 8528-1:2019 introduces rating definitions for three different operating conditions of gensets:

Continuous Power (COP) Rating: This rating indicates the maximum power output that a genset can deliver continuously without any time limitations, while maintaining specified conditions for fuel consumption and emissions.

Prime Power (PRP) Rating: This rating is applicable for the supply of power in lieu of a mains utility with an unlimited running time. It allows for a variable load, usually resulting in an average load factor of 70-80% of the COP rating.

Standby Power (ESP) Rating: This rating is appropriate for providing backup power during mains failure. It allows for a non-continuous operation with a maximum expected outage of 200 hours per year. The average load should not exceed 70% of the COP rating.

Importance of Compliance

Adhering to BS EN ISO 8528-1:2019 is crucial for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of gensets. Compliance with this standard ensures that gensets are reliable, efficient, and capable of performing under demanding conditions. It also aids in maintaining a safe working environment by establishing guidelines for emission levels and electrical safety.

Additionally, compliance with this standard facilitates easier comparison between different genset models, as it provides a standardized methodology for specifying performance parameters. This information allows users to make informed decisions and select the most suitable genset for their specific requirements.
