What is EN 62368-1:2019?

EN62368-1:2019 is a technical standard that specifies safety requirements for electronic equipment used in audio, video, and similar electronic equipment. It was published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and is recognized as the harmonized standard for compliance with the essential requirements of the European Union's Low Voltage Directive.

The Scope and Purpose of EN62368-1:2019

The standard applies to various types of electronic equipment, including audio and video equipment, information technology equipment, and communication technology equipment. Its purpose is to ensure the safety of the personnel operating the equipment, as well as to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and other hazards to users and the environment.

The scope of EN62368-1:2019 covers both consumer and professional electronic equipment. It includes requirements for electrical insulation, protective earthing, mechanical strength, and resistance to high temperatures. The standard also addresses potential risks associated with energy sources, such as batteries and power supplies.

The Key Changes in EN62368-1:2019

Compared to its predecessor, EN60950-1, EN62368-1:2019 introduces several significant changes. One of the key changes is the shift from prescriptive requirements to a performance-based approach. This means that instead of specifying detailed design criteria, the standard focuses on defining the desired outcomes and allowing manufacturers to choose their own methods to achieve those outcomes.

Another important change is the inclusion of hazard-based safety engineering principles. The standard now requires manufacturers to assess potential hazards and risks associated with their equipment and apply appropriate safeguards to mitigate those risks. This approach promotes a more proactive and systematic approach to safety, encouraging manufacturers to identify and address potential hazards at the design stage.

Compliance and Certification

In order to ensure compliance with EN62368-1:2019, manufacturers must conduct various tests and assessments to demonstrate that their equipment meets the required safety standards. This includes testing for electrical insulation, protective earthing, mechanical strength, and resistance to fire and heat.

Once a manufacturer has successfully demonstrated compliance, they can obtain a Declaration of Conformity (DoC) and affix the CE marking on their products. The CE marking is a mandatory requirement for electronic equipment sold in the European Union, indicating that the product meets all applicable EU safety directives.

It is important for manufacturers, importers, and distributors to stay updated on the latest version of the standard and ensure that their products comply with the requirements. Non-compliant equipment may pose significant safety risks and could be subject to recalls or legal penalties.
