Limited Cable Length

Another significant disadvantage of RS232 is its limited cable length. The maximum length of an RS232 cable is approximately 50 feet (15 meters). Beyond this distance, data integrity can suffer due to signal degradation caused by attenuation and noise interference. As a result, RS232's short cable range makes it unsuitable for certain applications that require longer distances. Industries such as telecommunications or industrial automation often require reliable communication over extended distances, and RS232 falls short in meeting these requirements.

Lack of Plug-and-Play Functionality

Unlike newer communication interfaces, RS232 lacks plug-and-play functionality. Devices connected via RS232 often require manual configuration, including setting baud rates, data format, and flow control. This setup process can be time-consuming and prone to errors, especially for non-technical users. In contrast, modern interfaces like USB allow for seamless connections without any manual configuration required, leading to increased convenience and user-friendliness.
