Grounding is an essential concept in electrical engineering and plays a crucial role in ensuring safety and preventing potential hazards. This grounding method helps prevent overvoltages, limits fault currents, and allows for effective fault detection and protection.
3. Lightning Protection Grounding
Lightning Protection Grounding is specifically implemented to safeguard structures, buildings, and electrical systems from the damaging effects of lightning strikes. When lightning strikes a structure, it seeks the path of least resistance to reach the ground safely. A lightning protection system includes air terminals or lightning rods installed at the highest points of a structure, down conductors that provide a low-resistance path for the lightning current, and grounding electrodes buried deep into the earth. By providing a low-resistance route for the lightning current, this grounding system helps prevent fire, structural damage, and electrical surges.
