EN 50752 is a technical standard that sets out requirements for household electronic appliances in terms of their power consumption and environmental impact. It provides guidelines on how to measure power consumption, standby energy usage, and other parameters related to energy efficiency and environmental performance. This standard was developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and applies to a wide range of household appliances, including televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners.
Measuring Power Consumption
One of the key aspects of EN 50752 is measuring the power consumption of electronic appliances. In order to accurately measure power consumption, specific testing procedures and equipment are used. These tests typically involve monitoring the energy usage of an appliance in different operating modes, such as active mode, standby mode, and off mode. The measurements are then used to calculate energy efficiency indicators, such as power consumption per hour or per year.
Standby Energy Usage
An important focus of EN 50752 is reducing standby energy usage. Standby mode refers to the state when an appliance is not actively being used but remains powered on. Many household appliances consume significant amounts of energy in standby mode, even when they are not performing any useful function. EN 50752 sets limits on the amount of power that an appliance can consume in standby mode. This helps to minimize wasted energy and reduce the environmental impact of household appliances.
Environmental Performance
In addition to power consumption and standby energy usage, EN 50752 also considers other factors that contribute to the environmental performance of household appliances. These include the use of hazardous substances, recyclability, and the overall lifecycle impact of the product. By setting strict requirements in these areas, the standard promotes the development and production of more environmentally friendly appliances. It encourages manufacturers to design products that are energy efficient, use safer materials, and can be easily recycled at the end of their life.
