Introduction
EN 16837:2012 is a technical standard that specifies the requirements and testing methods for portable child-restraining devices for use in motor vehicles. The standard was developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) with the aim of ensuring the safety and protection of children when traveling by car. It sets out guidelines for the design, construction, and performance of child car seats, with the ultimate goal of reducing the risk of injury or death in the event of a car accident.
Scope of the Standard
The scope of EN 16837:2012 covers child car seats intended for use in all categories of vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, and trucks. It applies to child restraints designed for children weighing up to 36 kg (approximately 79 lbs) and includes both rear-facing and forward-facing restraints. The standard also addresses the installation requirements, including the use of safety belts and attachment systems such as ISOFIX, to ensure proper securing of the child restraint in the vehicle.
Requirements and Testing Methods
EN 16837:2012 establishes minimum safety requirements for child car seats regarding their protective features, ergonomics, durability, and ease of use. The standard includes various tests that evaluate the performance of the child restraint under different conditions, such as frontal impact, side impact, and rollover. These tests assess factors like head excursion, chest acceleration, and stability, and help determine if the child car seat meets the established safety criteria.
Compliance and Certification
Manufacturers of child car seats must adhere to the requirements stipulated in EN 16837:2012 to ensure compliance. The standard provides a framework for the development and testing of child restraints, with the aim of ensuring consistent performance across the market. Compliance can be demonstrated through independent laboratory testing and certification by accredited bodies. By choosing car seats that meet this standard, parents can have confidence in the safety and reliability of the products they use to protect their children.
